Algebra 2 Tests
Tests will be given approximately
every six lessons throughout the school year.
To receive credit on a test question you must show your work (even on multiple choice questions). Correct answers that are not supported by corresponding work are likely to receive no credit. There are usually multiple methods to legitimately use algebra to solve a problem, but the key is to show step-wise procedural work. On the other hand, incorrect answers that show legitimate work are likely to receive partial credit. This is an algebra class. Algebra is expected! Guess-and-check is not algebra.
A variety of test types will be given.
Calculator / Non-calculator
On some tests you will be allowed to use your calculator. These tests will likely include problems that require some complicated arithmetic calculations. That is, after all, the point of using a calculator. Don't be surprized if your answer is a decimal number or an irrational number.
Classroom instruction and demonstrations will be done using a TI-83 (or TI-83 plus, or TI-83 silver edition) graphing calculator. The PHS Math Department strongly encourages you to acquire this brand and model of calculator. If you have a different brand calculator, or even a different model TI calculator, you may need to consult your owner's manual often because there is a good chance that your teacher will not be able to instruct you in its use. The TI-83 calculator is the only calculator that any student will ever need at PHS (and probably even at a collegiate level). You may choose to obtain a more expensive and powerful calculator, but the recommended TI-83 is used in all advanced math courses, including Calculus, at Ponderosa High School.
CALCULATORS MAY NOT BE SHARED DURING A TEST!
On other tests the use of a calculator will be forbidden. In this situation complicated arithmetic procedures are highly unlikely. If you find yourself in the midst of an indepth computation, then you can most likely assume that you have made a mistake somewhere in your problem. Most answers on a non-calculator test will be whole numbers, or simple fractions or mixed numbers.
Individual / Partner
Individual tests are the norm, but on occasion partner tests will be given. Either type could be calculator active or non-calculator in nature. Partners will be homogeneously grouped by the teacher. Individual tests will usually be worth 100 points; partner tests may vary.
